Sea Ponies would be connected to the water amirite.

I admit that the whole "connection to the earth" thing did seem like a somewhat akward attempt to make the the three tribes "equal" when they in fact weren't. It ends up working out in a nice bit of coincidence that most of the ponies who dealt with plants were Earth Ponies anyway.

Actually in a weird way I don't think anyone would have cared if they had not decided to give the Pegasi their whole weather control thing as part of the whole "ponies control nature" thing.

Pegasi controlling the weather is one of my absolute favorite things about the show. Of course, if they hadn't done it, I would likely have never thought about it so I certainly wouldn't be complaining...

Actually I mean the fact that the ponies have to ensure that ordinary physical activities like changing seasons, the moon and sun rising, crops growing, AND weather is one of my favorite things about the setting.

They can farm.

They. Can. Farm.

Ancient history is coming back to me. Earth ponies are very likely the reason pony civilization can even be a thing.
You watch him as he stutters over what to say. It's just a little game you play.
It's no easier for you some days.

@Mio World building is world building. The fact that the setting is so unique, with nature being heavily regulated and controlled rather than worshiped like you see in most fantasy settings, is a large part of the draw, IMO.

[up][up]That's very true. It's just not very stylish. evil grin

And I don't think the ability to spend long hours hard at work farming is ever going to grant a pony the same kind of joy or excitement that comes from flying or learning new spells, or even the simple satisfaction of being able to use telekinesis for simple tasks.

[up]Eeyup. They aren't flashy, but without them Equestria couldn't exist in a civilized state.

As far as weather control goes, my headcanon is that it would happen on it's own, it would just be highly unpredictable. The Pegasi don't so much make weather as control it to make sure there are no floods/droughts/etc.

I'm not saying that the nature control aspect was bad, just remarking on how things ended up working out within the setting.

[up][up]I'm sure you'll find a number of ponies who disagree.tongue

[up][up]Yeah, I think that's pretty much a given, since we have seen natural weather events on occasion. At the least, natural weather would drift in from the Everfree Forest.

@JT They have a weather factory. I'm pretty sure that that qualifies as making the weather. Natural weather can still crop up elsewhere, though.

[up]What I mean is that if the Pegasi didn't create their own weather, it would happen naturally. Just because they have a factory for making rainbows doesn't mean that rainbows can't occur without them. They probably prevent a lot of weather from occuring on it's own and have to create it to make up the difference.

@JT Oh, yeah. That's a given.

[up][up]The way that rainbows seem to function in the show seems to imply that they are either don't occur in nature, or "natural" rainbows would really freak ponies out.

[up]Well I assume that that rainbow was set up by the Pegasi, what with liquid being sucked out of a monochrome stencil(?) by the vaccum.

Yeah, the clouds moving on their own was a source of horror to Rainbow Dash in Bridle Gossip. It's just something that doesn't happen in their society.

Yeah, the world building in this how is great.

Also, seeing as though we're talking about earth pony magic, this is an excuse to pimp my fanfic.

Today, I just got hit by a case of Fridge Brilliance.

It's like this: you know how in "Party Of One" Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy made up that story about housesitting for a bear named Harry? Then, in "Lesson Zero", Fluttershy was fighting with, excuse me, massaging a bear. Could that bear in "Lesson Zero" be none other than...Harry? surprised

@Tiggers Probably. Fluttershy can't know too many bears that live outside of Everfree.

The fans already call him Harry based on that assumption. (And if it's wrong, we don't have any better name for him.)

The unused original version of the "Smile Song" includes a character named Hairy, who isn't specified to be a pony. Could it be?

Wow, that Nightmare Moon pic is awesome. I love her expression.

And Pinkie found something even she considers too silly to do.
