Step one: Be smart on the internet and don't click on/download random, shady things.
Step two: No need for a step two unless you somehow are on the receiving end of a targeted attack.

Just use Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free license and you can throttle the CPU usage for scans to prevent performance from going down the drain.
Also what lurker said, plus don't run admin/superuser all the time unless you know what you're doing.

I have not had a major virus in a few years now. I run firefox and a couple useful addons to protect myself (Not to mention I recognize a bad site when I see it)

Maybe one of us should PM ATC to see if he's all right?

@Lurker: he's wilfully browsing the web while admitting his rig is heavily infected. That's grounds for banhammering on account of infection vector quarantine.

I tend to stick with Nvidia cards as Ive had the best track record with them. Im not super fanboyish about it though, just had problems with an AMD card many moons ago and switched to Nvidia and never looked back.
The card I have is about 4 years old and still doing pretty good, I just want MOAR!
Funnily enough, even though I'm very smart about what sites I visit, nothing can prepare you for a perfectly legitimate site getting infected, and passing it on to you. I can think of at least four different sites that have been infected that I visit on occasion.

@turtle: well then try the Geforce GTS-640, keep in mind it's a double-decker graphics card that needs extra space for its sizeable heatsink.
@Was: I find Google Chrome and Trend Micro's Titanium Internet Security and even Firefox to some degree now possess the power to blacklist heavily infected danger sites. Also as a veteran of 4chan I have a powerful Admiral Ackbar radar.

I got one of those fake virus warnings from T Vtropes one time. It concerned me greatly.
I have about a $250 budget give or take for a new video card at the moment, and I have to check and see how much clearance I have inside of my case. Its a full size case so It should be alright but I suppose it depends on how the slots are arranged. I havent been in there for a while (I really should open it up to clean it.. ) and I cant remember how it looks exactly.
I know one video card barely fit because of the humungous fan on it.
Yeah, I've gotten viruses from legit sites before. Fortunately I back up all my stuff on a regular basis, so it usually isn't too big of a deal to just wipe the computer.

@Turtle: ah, scareware antivirus ads. Ignore them, some are malware Trojan horses. Also the gts-640 uses 1 pcie-x16 slot and needs two expansion spaces on a tower case because it needs the second slot space for a ventilation grille. Shouldn't cost more than about S$149-169.
I'm wondering if any pony ever dragon faxed Twi the stereotypical Nigerian prince email
#259896Ace Of ScarabsFri, 27th Jul '12 1:48:19 PMfrom Singapore
All this talk has made me imagine spam mail for tail extensions and stuff like that for ponies I can imagine Twi asking Celestia if she knows the Prince mentioned in this letter she got recently
Also yes I use Adblock plus on my desktop but only because of the horrible cpu-munching flash ad banners some other websites abuse. The Google banners here are mostly endurable, and I don't run adblock on my tablet.
In other news, I've had this stuck in my head all day. I for some reason I feel the urge to write a story where this account is actually the myth of the first Sonic Rainboom.
I love Rainbow (the group, not the pony )! But isn't that song a bit bleak for something like the first sonic rainboom?
I'd rather think of something like Rainbow in the Dark:
This sort of fits with the whole "Luna bringing eternal darkness" thing too, I think...

Indeed. I was kind of surprised that it took someone until the second anthology to make a PMV out of that song. But yeah, I wasn't looking for inspiration or anything; I was just listening to the song and then ponies appeared.
