@ Ace: That appears to be a recurring punchline for Cadance's magic.

@Kuroi And that's why my headcanon is that it only amplifies the love already there, meaning that the situation in the comic would have resulted in an increase in familial love rather than creepy romantic love.

Lurker: That doesn't make it too much less creepy, to be honest, seeing as how the spell is effectively a powerful charm spell. Want It, Need It makes me go :| too.

In my head canon Cadance magic heals love, bonds and relationships.

@Kuroi Well, it becomes rather obvious in retrospect that Want-it-need-it is Twilight's own attempt at replicating Cadance's magic that proved to be a bit... imperfect, to say the least.

Repairing and healing the bonds of love does sound much less creepy. That's a good way to put it.

@Lurker: Yeah that makes sense, Twi's magic replication isn't flawless. Required Secondary Powers at work, she must know more about the nature of the magic and understand it thoroughly before she can actually replicate it properly.

That basically. It's less "creating love that wasn't there to begin with" and more "rekindling an existing love that just happens to be going through a rough spot".

Also this. I think Twilight is a sort of Jack-of-All-Trades in that regard; she can perform almost any specialized spell, but not to the degree that the originator can. Even with Rarity's spell, Twilight's version was less efficient; Rarity homed in on large gem deposits, while Twilight could only pick out individual gems. She does have lots of magical potential, but it doesn't mean she can outdo everypony at their specialized talents.

@JT: Yes, totally agreed. It's kinda like Accelerator in To Aru Kagaku no Railgun needing to be good and maths and physics so he can manipulate velocities and acceleration exactly the way he needs, only Twi needs to master the backend of a spell before she can copy it properly. Her gem-detection spell seemed to point out large individual gems over a larger area where Rarity's version pinpoints dense gemstone clusters, but that's just tweaked detection variables.

I don't think Rowling is still poor, but Lauren is definitely rollin' the dough from her pony royalties

Not to mention that Twilight's version of Shining Armor's shield spell is much smaller and isn't selective in who it lets pass.

Yeah, I'm guessing that Twilight's only real specialized spell is her teleportation, and possibly enhanced telekinesis. Not to mention that Twilight is shown having to study how to perform certain spells, when it's likely that most unicorns don't really have to study how to do their specialties. Like I doubt Rarity had to study how to do the gemfinding thing; she just figured that out on her own.

@JT: I like to think #25 (Her Epic 'Stache spell) is either her own or a heavily-studied reproduction of Star Swirl the Bearded's own facial hair spell.

I find it kind of hilarious that it apparently took just as much effort to master that as it did to figure out the "give ponies wings" spell.

Actually Twilight's gem spell looked better to me. It found all the nearby gems at once while Rarity had to go for one deposit at a time.

@JT Even then, her teleportation appears to be limited in ways that I doubt a unicorn specializing in the spell would be. For example, she appears to need to know exactly where she is in relation to where she is going to teleport there, which means that she needs either line of sight to her destination, or just a good knowledge of the area around her. Otherwise, she would have been able to teleport out of the gemstone cavern under Canterlot.
