Perhaps Ponyville is bigger than we give it credit for. It could very well be the "Earth Pony Capital" of Equestria, much like Pegasi have Cloudsdale and Unicorns have Canterlot.

Maybe they live in another Ponyville-like town, and she moved so she wouldn't have to compete with her parents for business.

That'd be a good episode. Kind of like "Fall Weather Friends", except the Mane 6 compete against their mirror versions, and must unite to stop some bigger problem.

Presumably, Sweetie Belle is living with her parents. Rarity has her own shop so she lives independently.
I think a bigger question is where AJ's parents are, since they weren't even mentioned in the big family reunion in the pilot.

They are and her grandma isn't? But then again, we don't have a character with a tragic background yet, or any aesop relating to that. I can't think of any sort of accident in the ponyverse that would kill them, because of the lack of cars.

I thought AJ's parents might be dead, but there's no way that could possibly be cannon in an idealistic show like this.

Well of course not, explosives could hurt someone. >:(

Who would the rival group's dragon be? A younger version of Whimsey Weatherbe?

Well, to be perfectly honest I can't say it's reeeaally convinced me to watch anything - not reading any crossover pieces, myself. And interestingly, while it's not the first time I've tried to write something(though it's the first fasnfiction I've written) it did bring me the ability to actually finish writing something. Which, seriously, had never happened before. I would get 5 or so pages in and get bored.
It's funny, "That first 80's special with the centaur-thing" was the only thing from My Little Pony I had already watched before Friendship is Magic, but once the latest season ended, I felt driven to start watching all the episodes after that instead of just reading about them. I think it was from reading some other MLP thread that pointed out the G1 series' bizarre antagonists made it pretty fun on occasion.
Well, you're certainly welcome. And yes, people have linked everything to ponies.
I'm a college student! I don't have time for this!
