Cream soda isnt too bad flat. Coke is AWFUL flat, Ive tasted it quite a few times in my youth when I reached for a can and grabbed the flat one that I forgot to throw away from the day before. (Even worse Im pretty sure I accidentally drank from a month old open can at one point... PTTHHHBLEHBLAHURG!)

It doesn't escape, you have to use time honored traditions like waiting, releasing bubbles over time if you're using a bottle, use sugar to supercharge the fizzing process so you're left with a pleasent less bubbly drink, or get a lot of ice and more patience.

Also I've never kept carbonated drinks long enough for them to go flat in the can/bottle.

My sense of taste tells me that bubbles irritate the tongue and throat and obscure the flavor of soft drinks. You have to sip the damn things in teeny tiny amounts in order to get a pleasent drinking experience:
