@Yeller: He vaguely resembles a Chinese Lion Dance lion puppet, or one of those heraldric lion symbols.

@Ed: Yeah, rainbow's art is cute. I still kinda find the slightly confused and frightened expressions of his OC pony Gamma Sigma quite woobierific and a tad disconcerting.

BTW it looks like the no underage r34 b& on Derpibooru extends to foalcon. Oh well, it was getting too creepy anyway and is probably a Moon Banishing (or petrifying) offence in Equestria.

I just discovered that Rainbow Fish does not have a German Wikipedia article despitre originally being written in German. IT does have Italian and Polish articles for some reason.

There is an explanation on the Wiki page:

The story goes that once upon a time a monk had a dream in which there were many sorrows and evils plaguing the land. The monk prayed and asked the gods how he could prevent these evils from occurring. The gods told him that a lion would protect them and fight back the evils. The Chinese people had never seen a lion before, but had heard stories that the lion was the king of all the other animals, so the monk combined all the lucky or magical animals he could think of and so made a lion.

So, it's kind of a mix of stuff apparently. That may explain the design.

I'm pretty sure The King of Red Lions is based off a Chinese Gaurdian Lion.
