I've decided on the Thief since he starts with the Master Key and I want to open things. And my gift is the Old Witches's Ring because it does nothing so I'm banking on it doing something later. I'll report back later with my adventures.

Lol, that is exactly what I picked for my first character. Master Key is probably the "best" gift overall, so it's good you got it. You'll see about the ring. As a thief, you're going to be very vulnerable and wimpy to start out with, so learn how to use the various dodge techniques available. You also have a shield that is extra good at parrying, so you might want to learn how to do that. Definitely remember to use your Lock On, it makes a huge difference. The thief has low strength so you're going to have to raise that a little if you want to use most weapons, or you can stick with a dexterity build and use dex weapons. Dex weapons are usually fast and more skill based than the strength ones, they're pretty fun. And if you get your strength up a little too you can use the various katanas throughout the game, those are pretty cool.

When you get to Firelink Shrine, head down the elevator and grab the Estoc. It's a really cool sword with an AWESOME moveset that's very good for early game, you might like it. I do believe you will need a bit more strength to be able to wield it though.

Most important tip you can possibly use to help you survive: USE YOUR SHIELD.
