The trick for switching bodies but not voices is that the V As have to capture the mannerism and verbal tics of their new characters. For example, if AJ ended up in Twilight's body, Tara would have to still use Twilight's voice, but with a southern drawl. Could be tricky, but also hilarious.

I'm also bad at RTS games. It's one reason I prefer turn-based or 4X.

Have you tried Achron? The community is small enough that you acutally have a chance of doing well.
