@Turtle IMO, that would make a great subject for an episode, with a lesson on commitments, jealousy and time management. Then, once it is resolved, it's not a problem any more, and you get Character Development on both sides! It's a win-win!

I put the idea forward before. Big Mac's childhood best friend returns to Ponyville. The one AJ always had a crush on. It ends with him having to explain that as she's practically a sister to him...he can't go out with her.

Lot's of bad experiences, mostly of the "I got screwed over because I needed a friend of mine's help in a really big way and he couldn't show up because he was too busy wooing some woman, who in each and every case turned out to be some kind of scumbag" variety.

My own romances didn't normally turn out much better, but I was usually smart enough to not go in too deep.

There was this one story that I was reading on EQD a while ago called Apples and Wrenches. Basically this old friend of Applejack's comes to Ponyville after being gone for a few years because he, his little brother, and his dad just moved back from Manehattan. It was pretty good and the reception in the comments was pretty positive (probably because there was past history between them, She Is Not My Girlfriend applied, and the guy wasn't a complete Marty Stu) but I eventually quit reading it because of the writing style (the author was one of those people that spelled RD's name as "Rainbowdash".

but the act of two lovers getting together and being romantic and stuff of that ilk has NEVER appealed to me... ever.

I don't understand why people keep comparing him to Jerks like Gilda or even call him villain. He teach assertiveness to Flutershy because he wanted to help and he was reasonable after she rejected it.

BTW Now when I see Molestia or other picture I imagining them being victim of bloodbending :D

PYHD had one of my favorite references to anything in the show:

What I want to know is why all those ponies were at an ASSERTIVENESS self-help workshop when they were already assertive and brash enough to literally THROW Fluttershy away

That is so...strange. (To me, anyway)

To me, the romance is such a powerful tool in story telling because it's such a base human experience, and if it's done well I always feel like it adds something.
