Genre =/= Quality.

Well, yeah. It seems to me from the dozens of "Literature" books I've read that the only thing that makes them all the same genre is that nothing interesting happens in them. Literature books are all about inner struggle, about the protagonist coming to grips with their own self or some nebulousness change in society, something like that. They tend to be very light on plot.

I'm the furthest thing from a literary snob. I prefer sci-fi, fantasy, and horror to conventional literature.

I had to watch Confessions of a Shopaholoic, the Legally Blonde movies, and other mindless Rom Coms at the behest of my older sister.

[up] Um, how does that exclude sci-fi? All those things you listed as belonging solely to literature can be present in anything.

Mostly read Beloved and uh, yeah I really wish I hadn't....

Seconding. It is an awful book. I'm pretty sure it was the 19th century version of a shock site. It still manages to be boring, too.

@Condo: I'm talking about the "Literature" genre, like you see in bookstores. Which contains almost no fantastical elements whatsoever. All writing can be lumped together as simple literature, but I thought we were talking about the genre.

You know what? I don't think any of us understands what the other people are saying.

That movie was the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Especially the "Beyond The Infinite" sequence. My Facebook post after seeing it was "WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST WATCH."

Like, my aunt refused to watch Pulp Fiction. She would talk about how she just knew that it had to be a bad movie. Because it was violent.

Please don't act like that, Blue.

Also: Faust = Literature = Fantasy.

@ginger: There's no reason to be mean about it. I saw it for the first time when I was 12, and I love it. Yes, the apes and the beyond the infinite, and the freaking blue danube. ALL of it. One of the greatest movies of all time.

Here's a question for all of you. What's the worst movie you've had the mispleasure of viewing all the way through? Remember, if you stopped watching it before the credits came up, it doesn't count.

That's a really tough question. I'd say it was a documentary about spelling bee contestants that I forget the name of, except that I stopped paying attention after the first couple hours (slight exaggeration).
