I wanna repeat this, since the first time I asked it got lost in the shuffle:
In my fanfic canon, I have ponies keeping humans as pets*
that is, Dream Valley ponies do it. Equestria ponies have never seen a human before but once they do, many of them want one as well
. I hear a lot of people say this is basically slavery, and then from there say ponies wouldn't do it.
What I wonder is—okay, if you buy that argument, then how in tarnation is Spike (who is clearly a servant) A-okay? Methinks if a pony can have a dragon who is at her beck and call, there's no reason one couldn't have a human who fills basically the same role.
Is it just because the readers are human, and can't reconcile with the idea that cute ponies could possibly own them? (Most "humans meet ponies" stories have the humans keeping ponies as pets...)

Well... if the humans have the same amount of freedom that Spike seems to enjoy.. then I dont see a problem.
Now if they put them on leashes and make them eat out of bowls on the floor...
Element of Misery...

@ Moe: Because keeping a sapient as a pet is slavery not servitude?
So, we've talked about our favourite things about Pinkie.
What's your favourite thing about AJ?
I like her strong family values.

@ Moe because Spike ISN'T a "servant" and certainly not a slave, he's family to Twi, sure he helps her out a lot, but it's because he WANTS to, he legitimately loves helping her cause she his family. And yeah he has chores, but it's nothing more then any kid his apparent age has to do.

First off, Spike is not a pet. How is Twilight treating him like a pet, exactly?
Two, if you ask me, I wouldn't want to be someone's pet (pony or otherwise) in the same way I wouldn't want an Equestrian pony as a pet. They're very clearly intelligent, sentient creatures, and making them a mere "pet" would be degrading to them.

@Moe Here's the key. In your fic, if a Human wanted to walk away and be independent of their "owner", could they? If the answer is no, then it's slavery. Now, slavery existing in your story shouldn't be a problem, especially since you seem to be doing an AU type thing.

@Bad I love her accent and her warm attitude. She's always so willing to comfort someone when they need help

@ Kyler: Real ponies are sentient. You are thinking of sapient.
