Well I don't think their political system is anywhere close to as dysfunctional as ours. Though there might be anti immigration sentiments, as seen in Bridle Gossip.

except, once again, no pony knew she was foreign! And after they found out, they had no issue with that. Again, until Twilight said something nopony knew Zecora was anything but a pony with a weird die job. It wasn't her non-pony status that scared them. It was the "living in the Everfree Forest" part that made them sure she was evil.

well, the Everfree Forest isn't completely bad. The Apples seem to utilize it safely enough for Zap Apples and such

I'd say that in practice it's no worse than a volcano (and probably a bit less dangerous)
