Apparently, the actors for Doctor Strangelove thought they were doing a drama. Kubric told them to do wacky performances for "practice takes" after promising that those practice takes would never see the light of day.

Mostly because his films were good.
Still not really an excuse. I don't care how good the product is, it's not worth nearly killing your workers.
The lead designer in charge of LA Noir apparently worked his team like slaves and verbally abused them if he disagreed with him, and a full 100 people got screwed out of any credit on a technicality. The game may have been innovative(Note I do not say good), but I still don't accept the lead as a good leader.

One of my classmates takes after Kubrick.
He forced a guy to do one scene so many times that it ended up ripping almost ALL the skin off his knees. The guy could barely walk and was crying by the end (shudder)
