If you put your soul somewhere other than your body such that if your body is killed, you can make a new one because your soul is still alive and kicking, then you're basically a lich.
As far as undeadness goes, I wouldn't mind being a ghost, myself. Incorporeality is awesome.

Undead Mages, become more powerful when turned into Liches. If you read Order of the Stick you may have idea.

1. It probably depends on what kind of ghost you are. Some are strictly incorporeal (you can't touch this, no exceptions). Others are selectively incorporeal (I can pass through walls and then smack you in the face).
2. You can get a lot of mileage out of talking to people even if you can't physically interact with them. Granted, it would mostly involve scaring the living daylights out of them, unless you can pull of a sort of Casper the Not-About-To-Eat-You-Kind-Of-Ghost thing.

You'd probably want to be the kind of ghost than can operate heavy machinery and keyboards. There are kinds of ghosts that can do that, right? I forget from where, though. Granted, we usually know ghosts as these guys that cannot interact with stuff, ever.

Hey im fine with most undead, just not you rotting corpses, sorry but you leave dead chucks of flesh EVERWHERE, you can never get the smell out of the room afterwards.
