I just got done reading Arthur Waley's Monkey: Folk Novel of China*

which is basically a heavily abridged version of Journey to the West

and all the sudden I'm imagining a Ponified version of the story. With Twilight Sparkle as Tripitaka (or Sanzo, to those more familiar with the Japanese names). Rainbow Dash would of course be Sun Wukong (aka Son Goku, or Monkey), although I can't see her converting to Buddhism. But who would be Cho Hakkai*

Would you recommend that? I wanted to read Journey to the West awhile ago, but it was four volumes, and I didn't have the time. I read a bit of it, but I didn't get to the characters you're talking about, so I don't know which ponies to cast as them.

If you don't have time or the patience for the full story, then yes Monkey: Folk Novel of China is an acceptable substitute.

On the other hand, I'm out of school now, so maybe I'll just get around to reading the whole thing. Have you read Water Margin or Romance of the Three Kingdoms? Those ones are also on my list.

The shameful thing was that the Chinese heavenly officials didn't know how to deal with a super powered Monkey.

He did seem a bit overpowered from the bits I read. Does he actually face credible threats later? Because at the start he just sort of walks right over everyone.

The Buddha does trick him and imprison him for his mischief.

I've read the full version of Three Kingdoms (as translated by Moss Roberts). The Water Margin and Dream of the Red Mansions are on my hit list.

He does eventually get pwned by Buddha.

But as for "facing credible threats"... it didn't seem to me like its as simple as all that. You'll probably see what I mean by the time you reach the halfway point.
