@Harry Potter Well, it was a massive spoiler that could get you banned from places for revealing it for a while after the book came out. Of course, it quickly did become It Was His Sled material, but you could never be sure that someone wouldn't be spoiled, so you still had to tread carefully around the subject. Nowadays the practice has evolved into a meme, more or less.

@Dramatic Irony Like anything else, it can be done poorly and it can be done well. It all comes down to the context.

But do you ever think Dramatic Irony can get annoying if it's used CONSTANTLY within the same story?

For example, in ASOIAF, a main character keeps going on about certain other characters being dead and how it's driving most of her actions when we KNOW for a fact that they aren't dead
