Everypony in Equestria is a good singer except for Scootaloo.

Musical World Hypotheses is a very odd trope.

I'd say Equestria falls under type 4.

The only bad singer we've seen so far is Scootaloo. I made Star Swirl a bad singer as well to keep her company, but that's a bit of an Informed Flaw and may simply be her underestimating herself (which would be in character).

With the exception of the majority of Pinkie songs (things like Smile excluded) and Love is in Bloom I think the songs aren't really happening. The exposition songs such as BBBFF are just exposition translated into song format for us.

When I first started watching, I thought Pinkie was going to be the only one who burst into song due to her randomness.

And then Winter Wrap Up took the wind out of my sails.

I think that most are happening. Most ponies just happen to enjoy singing and work together to make it sound pretty when they have the oppertunity.

I my headcanon, the chorus for Winter Wrap Up is a traditional work song which is traditionally peppered with whatever you want in between.

EDIT: Also, I see that you were talking about the names of Twilight's family.

In my headcanon, it goes like this: Nightlight Sparkle, Twilight Velvet (ponies don't always have one spouse take the others name and when they do, it can be in either direction), Shining Armor Sparkle (He uses his middle name as his last name as Shining Sparkle doesn't sound very stallionly) and Twilight Sparkle (As is common with ponies, she was named after a parent, but as her mother kept her last name, there was no need to add "the Second").

Ponies don't seem to really have family names.

Not all of the Apple clan have "apple" in their names and Shining Armour doesn't have "Sparkle" (which I always assumed was Twi's surname) in his name.

I know that they officially don't have family names, but I like treating them as if they do. Helps that it's important in my fanfic.

Therefore, I've ruled that Shining's full name is Captain Shining Armor Sparkle. Similarly, the Apple siblings are Macintosh Apple, Applejack Apple and Applebloom Apple.

Star Swirl sure makes names seriously, Sereg.

She does take them seriously, yes.

As Ace implied, the protagonist has an obsession with names born from the fact that she shares her name with an ancestor who was a great pony, yet fell into obscurity. She doesn't want that to happen to anypony else and therefore emphasises the importance of specify exactly which pony you are talking about so that their deeds will be properly remembered.

Oh yeah, the other thing is that Star Swirl considers herself unworthy of her name and therefore deliberately emphasises that she's the Hundred and Forty Seventh rather than the Bearded to demonstrate that she acknowledges that she is not as amazing as her ancestor. She extends this to other ponies as part of this way of thinking.

Now I'm curious as to why Star Swirl never got a cutie mark revolving around names.

At TRU now, wedding series brushables are out. Twi has a bowl of flowers with a photo of Shiny and Cadence, AJ has a punch bowl, a ladle, and two cups. Pinkie's got a delicious cake, and Dashie has a photo frame with the Mane Six in it.

Yeah, we have family names, (the Cakes for example) we just don't have much need to use the second name.

As for theme naming, it's merely a coincidence that some names match the profession of the pony (Applejack and the Cakes). A few names where the name and the profession don't match up would be Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Rarity, (unless there's some secondary meaning that I'm missing).
