I truthfully never thought about it that much, but it makes sense that Changelings are a Pony-species since their default form is Pony-like. But I get the feeling that they're not natural creatures, whatever they are. They don't operate within the bounds of science.

Definitely not. I

that Chryalis would prefer not to subsist on Love, but has to anyway for survival, and something BIG corrupted her and her little ponies. Also magic, which can rewrite some of the effects to defy regular biology.

Put beside creatures that make plants grow faster by being near, creatures that can fly despite having no effective means of generating or maintainig lift, and creatures than can warp the fabric of reality to their whims. The Changelings do not operate in the bounds of science. Heaven forbid.
