I don't know anything about Mitt Romney, so I didn't know why comparing him to Charlie was supposed to be funny.
It's not specific to Mitt Romney, it's a parody of a political trope. You take two people, one who is your political enemy and the other is someone obviously evil, like the Unabomber or Hitler or something. Then you take quotes and mix them up and challenge people to guess which is which. The idea is that if you can't distinguish which quotes are which, that means the two people have the exact same views.
If there is anything that you are alone in thinking, it's "thinking that you're alone in thinking of your theories".
