You can save him just for being Paragon on choice intelligent, non asshole answers on Virme. (And do quest related to him before, but this you should always do for more EXP)

There's an Intimidate option as well as charm. IIRC.

Besides if you're playing Renegade solely to be renegade in my opinion you're doing it wrong. You should do what you think is right not what an arbitrary alignment system tells you.

Nah Wreave will side with you as well. And I think you'll like him more than Wrex.

Problem with that though is that even when I disagree with the Paragon option, I disagree with the other options too. I'd never speak as angrily/smugly as shepard does in Renegade mode even if I agree with him. I don't like his tone and attitude
