I really liked it! I was hoping that Pinkie would learn a lesson rather than giving one, and I was happily correct about that, too (where she learned not to jump to conclusions). It was pretty funny and had a lot of good parodies as well, including the hilariously ironic part where Pinkie makes Twilight, of all the ponies, take the Watson role.

As for the surname's two spellings, I'm guessing his name is spelled "Gustave Le Grand" (given that the episode is all about Added Alliterative Appeal).

Yup. Gustave is an old french name. Gustave Eiffel, for example. I doubt that Legrand / Le Grand is his real name, it's probably just a self-attributed title : Le Grand means The Great, after all. And it totally fits his Dastardly style.
