The TA campaign is actually kind of decent. It's not the best storytelling by any stretch of the imagination, but I've seen worse.

Yeah, I remember the Commander being the only unit able to capture. I also remember he D-gun the commander had.

@Drenius: BTW only your Commander can capture. For extra hilarity, capture something heavy with the carryall and steal it with the Commander

Total Annihilation's backstory is really grimdark bleak though, a glorious kingdom brought low by bitter civil war that laid waste to the galaxy D:

D-Gun is a fun emergency weapon, but it leaves no wreckage to reclaim or use the Core Necro on.

I'm pretty bad at RTS games as well. I like to take my time with things, so it takes me way to long to build up my base.

Have you tried Achron? The community is small and friendly, so multiplayer competition isn't as cutthroat as most games. And due to the nature of the time manipulation mechanics, there isn't as much pressure at the start. Even if you mess up your build, you can go back in time and redo it.
