I'm guessing that using it is standard procedure, but RD doesn't really care and didn't bother busting it out until she actually needed it. Also, because RD never uses it, Twilight is the only one who knows how to run it.

It could just be that they never needed physical numbers to describe their flight before...
See, in Generation 3, I figured pegasi worked because the world had lower gravity than the real world, and that's why full-size ponies could be seen lifted by a few party balloons, or a few kites, or a few Breezies. But I guess that's not cool enough, and so now pegasi have powers over inertia or something like that.
@Ginger: To be fair, Twi smacked them in the face with technobabble.
