Hey, how about that, they're finally addressing the question of why the school had a random dragon egg for a student to try and hatch. Hopefully they won't just leave it at "I don't know why it was there."

@Death It's just that SOMETHING would need to trigger his angst. What better way than to stumble across the migration early on in the ep and have one of the dragons there make him question himself. Maybe something to the tune of:
"You should come with us"
"No, my place is with Twilight in Ponyville."

@Ginger: That sounds pretty likely. He has to find out about the migration somehow, and there clearly isn't a lot of info about dragons coming from other sources. Although, you'd think a massive migration would be one of the things ponies would actually bother recording, if for no other reason than to know how to avoid it. I wonder how often these happen.
Judging by how long dragons sleep, it's possible there hasn't been a migration since before Ponyville was founded.

And as to how often they occur? By our standards a migration is an annual event or something that happens once a generation.

i wonder if sleeping for years on end will become a problem for Spike as he gets older
Potential sad fic idea: As Spike's need for sleep gets bigger and bigger and bigger, he becomes terrified that one day he'll sleep until long after the mane cast dies, so he forgoes sleep and almost dies of sleep depravation

Unless ponies have few hundred years lifespan I don't think Spike sleeping would be problem. He could start really long sleeps long after Mane Cast deaths.
