Just because changes are required to make a good movie doesn't mean you should cram in plotholes for the heck of it though.
Anyway, anyone seen this? It's awesome. Basically some people showed that various retro Nintendo games are NP-Hard when considered with unbounded level size.

agreed with both lurker and Story, yes some changes need to be made, but you have to make sure these changes don't open up gaping plot holes.
and this includes cutting the scene that removes the plot-hole unless you get the directors cut.
Build a fool proof system, and the world will create a better fool.

I wish they would define NP so i can understand what they're talking about.

Oh, of course. I never said that butchering the plot was ever a good idea. I just think that people who get up in arms about movies changing plot points to make things fit should calm down as long as said changes do not introduce any strange plot holes. As long as the film is internally consistent, consistency with the book shouldn't matter.

An NP problem is one for which, whenever the answer is Yes, there is a proof that can be verified in polynomial time. An NP-Hard problem is one that is at least as hard as any other NP problem.
A classic example of an NP Hard problem is the Traveling Salesman Problem: Given a set of distances between various cities, and value k, determine if there is a path shorter than k which visits every city. When the answer is yes, then it can easily be proved by providing the path.

I'm sure I'm misunderstanding this, because there is no way that they are referring to difficulty of solving a problem when they say "hard", because difficulty is subjective.

I would guess hard as in solid; a concrete example that one could test and prove. But that's just my guess.
So it occurs to me, my quest for a full set of McDonald's ponies is going to become more difficult now that I've only three to go. Round 5 has produced... another Twilight. But that's okay, because I have a plan for it. And a backup plan, should the first plan fail.
Night Apple!

No, they define it in an objective, mathematical sense.
Basically, they show that any logical equation of a certain type can be expressed as a level design, meaning that in order to solve the problem of whether a given level is beatable, you need to be able to solve arbitrary logical equations, a known hard problem.

@Ginger and Apple: Nighty night.
I shouldn't really talk about butchering novels with adaptations. I adored Disney's version of The Jungle Book for example.
