@cookoo: But Spike had no wings even as an adult. Maybe the young dragons will have very small wings, like how young pegasus wings are little stubs.

@Ginger: The story is basically what happens when magical girls are forced to have their story happen in the grim darkness of a universe fated to die by the Urobutcher.

If the Dragons turn out to be jerks, Ponyville will be next on their hitlist... and Spike wants to make them avoid the place or warn everypony without betraying his new buddies.

Maybe Spike is a wingless species of dragon and we'll see a variety of different types winged, wingless, water, fire, acid.

I always had this theory that there are 3 types of Dragons. Similar to how there are 3 main types of ponies.

Massive (even by Dragon standards) Dragons (Earth Pony)
Winged Dragons (Pegasus)
Magic Dragons that can use their dragon fire to cast spells (Unicorns)

Spike is the latter, hence why his fire can teleport stuff.

Likely, there are in fact many kinds of dragon. In what way they vary, and whether or not the group of dragons Spike meets are all of the same or different kinds, is still up in the air.
