Well, some artists make their brushes from the clippings after their haircuts. Also, waste not want not, it's like those mystical samurai things where they make their own weapons so it is literally a part of them. It's a kind of Mythic thingie.

Also for commercial instruments they get the glue from cast-off hoof clippings from all the pony pedicure going on where they don't wear their hooves down normally.

Now that I think about it as a music lover I wouldn't mind having Octavia and DJ Pon-3 st my place as Pon-3/Vinyl Scratch would be there primarily during the day and Octavia at night or evening unless she has a playing engagement or is on tour with the Canterlot Symphony Orchestra.
