Well, personally, I'm not a fan of exploring. the oldschool castlevania games were just balls to the wall platorming and combat at it's most satisfying.

They had some awesome bosses

See, it tests your reflexes to the extreme. Whenever you press the whip button (nothing else, jumps, subweapons, etc. do this), there is a slight delay, allowing you to not only time your attacks, but to hit multiple targets at once because the whip stays out for a second!
