ok I will tell you something that you wont like Ginger just so your forwarned the final confrontation with Red Eye isn't the climax of the story, it's near the end is a pretty big emotional climax, but the real big climax is the final battle against the Enclave

@ Ginger: Well, we've only ever seen the elements be used on a single target and they have a lengthy charge sequence and reload time. Not the best weapon for a war. Plus they only work when the holders are in sync.

as to the triggers thing, someone actually drew some FOE firearms, they aren't shaped like ours, the main barrel etc.. is but the grip is behind the gun, not under and shaped to be held in a ponies mouth, with the trigger pulled with there tongue.

and yeah it probly is a AU.

as to the Elements, it not really brought up why they didn't use them in the war, but probably because neither side was really evil, it was a combo of societal differences, resource issues, and misunderstandings.
