@Gingerale: Fanfiction actually did exist way before the internet. Back in the H.P. Lovecraft era, for instance, there was a huge amount of fanfiction. People traded it to each other by mail, swapped it at conventions, put it out in magazines, and even outright published it since Copyright wasn't a common thing at the time.
