@Fallen Wasn't quite the same. (for me at least) If I reveal that I'm a brony to people, the worst they'll do is make fun of me. I can put up with that.

If I spent most of my life claiming that I hate something, then flip flop and suddenly start liking it... oh... then that leads to a load of smug bastards saying: "I told you so" Oh I wanna punch something whenever I hear that combination of vowels and consenants

I think I could tell people I watch My Little Pony. I'd just note at the same time that it shares writers with Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and stuff and that the designers wrote at least one character as a drunk even if they couldn't admit it in the show.

Just now watching today's episode. Thoughts so far:

Why is she wearing a hospital gown? Pony clothing continues to confuse me.
How exactly is her wings supposed to heal when she's lying on top of them?
This episode got anvilicious real fast...
Wow, it took her ONE SCENE to decide she loved reading. And it wasn't even well written! Well people who don't normally read do tend to have lower standards.

@Blue Her problem was just that she never even tried reading before. That was the point. She had no logical reason to NOT like reading (like I do.)

and yeah, because first time readers are the ultimate literary critics.

I will say that if I had one complaint about the episode, it would be that she goes from "I hate reading" to "reading is awesome!" way too quickly, which would mean that she actually had to read for a while before she realized how much she liked it. That could have waited until after the first Derring-Do scene. As is, it kinda sends the message that you can know whether or not you're going to like a book before you finish the first paragraph.

Then again, if something doesn't capture your attention early on, then it isn't doing a very good job at being a form of entertainment.

I never understood the purpose in forcing yourself to read stuff you aren't enjoying, just because it will APPARENTLY get better later on

Now truthfully, to me this episode was OK...not terrible, not outstanding...say...6/10.

It had it's moments...but it didn't blow me away.

I liked how when at the end of the episode, when Rainbow Dash was saying how the book was completely "un-put-down-able", Twilight had the biggest grin on her face. Its like she was thinking "Yes! I've converted her! Soon I will have somepony to write & share fanfics with!"

I agree with this sentiment, though you should at least give something a chance to sell itself if you have any reason to believe you might find it remotely interesting.

On the other hand, I recently picked up Life of Pi, for example, but it was such a dreadful slog that I had to drop it after the first three chapters.

@Ginger: I agree on the basic idea, but at the same time there's a lot to be said for taking time to set stuff up. I'm not saying that the first five chapters are allowed to suck, just that some works take more time to get into.

Yeah, you don't have to slog through stuff that you don't like, but at the same time I think that somebody who chucks a book or whatever after only one or two pages isn't giving it a fair chance.
