Yeah, that was a pretty good episode. I feel like it was more...over the top than a lot of other episodes in now the world-building was, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Good episode. Now I need watch it in normal way (on You Tube) to decide how I like this episode.
I was expecting GS to wierd during presentation and other foals in class liked that and only Diamond Tiara belived that behavior was embarasing, but no learned that Granny is awesome and badass. Great job episode.
And she was cute during that flashbacks.
Also they make Apple farm 20% cooler thant's to Apples from Everfree Forest.
They are like the others. Strange, hideous, resisting, fighting. Only these were not like the others. They did not die.

Yes, I agree with Pan! I'd say that after this epsiode, after Cheerilee explicitly asking AB for ANY other family members and her not having any, that the Apple parents being dead is practically canon.

@Dhana: Yeah, watching pony eps was also my first contact with American commercial times. I was particularily shocked at the commercial right after the opening credits.

Wait, didn't Twilight say back in Winter Wrap Up that Ponyville wrapped up winter without magic for hundreds of years? Granny Smith is older than I thought.
One of the people on the show said something about seeing the Apple parents as explorers, so until proven otherwise I'll just assume that AJ's dad is Indiana Jones.

Well, made for TV movies aren't as common these days, and I usually watch shows on dvd, but the commercials certainly cut into the enjoyment of the programs I do watch. It's insane for every hour block of programming, we have roughly 15 minutes of commercials broken up every couple of minutes of show time.
