Railing for exile because Spike, as he gets older, might become dangerous to the citizens of Ponyville. This is predicated by a scene wherein townspeople react badly to Spike getting larger.

The similarities don't stop!

Well, nobody was too enraged when Twilight ballsed up in Lesson Zero...or at Snips and Snails for accidently bringing in the big bear cub.

Exile actually might be a dangerous option in this case, now that I think about it.

Because there's always the possibility that the dragon you threw out of the town will (without anyone to curb his greed) grow old, huge, and wicked, and eventually think to himself "hey... you know who made me really angry? I wonder if they can exile a guy from a pile of ash?"

Working on curbing his greed is a safer option than hoping that when he becomes huge, he'll either forget about your town or continue to see things your way as he increasingly becomes greedy and wrathful.

[up][up][up] He's not my ONLY friend. In his mindless state he could trample my family.

Also, why couldn't he just go live in Canterlot till he's fully grown? Celestia would have the unshakable power to keep him under control (It'd be MUCH safer than Ponyville anyway)

I wouldn't just kick him out and expect him to live off the land.

The difference between Spike here and Twilight and snips and snails is that they simply screwed something up. They have the ability to learn from this, and are fully in control over whther or not they will do it again. Spike, on the other hand, was not in control of what he did. And instinct was triggered and he rampaged. Twilight and Snips and snails caused problems, Spike was a problem.

[up][up] They certainly weren't happy with her.

Or with Pinkie, whose runaway cymbal stopped Dash from throwing out the second batch.

[up] But as an instinctual problem, it's now a known issue with warning signs and a clear solution.

Well, this is an idealistic setting...something will be worked out I guess.

Obviously, the solution is to filter out all gifts given to Spike so that he only gets books.

@Ginger: That's not really exile. tongue

Anyway, it's true that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, but that doesn't mean you can screw the few over if you don't need to. I fully agree that they need some sort of preventative measures, and that sending Spike somewhere else is a viable option, just that it isn't the primary option.

But anyway, I think we're going in circles, and it's fairly obvious that whatever conclusion we come to, Spike isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

As I said, it'd be my first thought. Nowhere near my last. If a better solution exists (which it did in this case) then that's the solution which would be used.

That's horrible. I mean cruel. To him. I would love a book for a gift but that's just mean.

So yeah, while I'm out I find out two of my favorite people want to EXILE best pony dragon?

.......

I agree. Sort of. I mean.... There has to be like a controlled environment they can have him around or something along with half a dozen contingency plans and back up plans and an emergency system.

Spike doesn't deserve to be exiled, he needs to be observed.

Exile was probably the wrong word to use. If no feesible solution could be found, I'd rather he live in a place that's better suited to stopping him if things go wrong. Like Canterlot.(because of Celestia)

[up][up]Thank you. I'm glad someone noticed, I wasn't to sue if making The two Detective/Inspectors expies of Shawn and Monk was a good idea.

In the long run, if Spike's greed can be controlled, wouldn't keeping him around be a good thing. After all who/what (besides a Physical God) would willingly mess with a town that has a giant firebreathing dragon in residence.

Granted something like this comes up in my fanfic. cool

So basically just find a environment where the instinct can be watched, and counteracted if it starts to act up? Try to create one in Ponyville, but if that doesn't work find somewhere else where such an environment exists/can be created? Seems like the most reasonable solution.

It sort of seems like the simplest solution would be to isolate him if he ever gets hoardy. He wouldn't have anything left to take, so the instinct might disappear.

[up][up]Very true. That's actually a great option, I mean I'm sure it wears off after a while of not hoarding.
