The reason I equate him to a unicorn is because Unicorn magic can teleport stuff. As can Spike's fire. Now, this might be a trait typical of all dragons, we don't know for sure, but if it ISN'T then I'd say my theory makes sense.

Yours does too if magic fire IS typical amongst dragons of course

Yeah, I really enjoyed the fact that we finally got an episode focused primarily on the mane cast interacting with each other. Not that I'm complaining about the time secondary characters have been getting, but it's nice to see one centered around the group.

THAT'S IT!!

I was looking for a term to describe why I liked this ep so much. That's it. The character's interactions with each other were sweet and GREAT!

When Applejack and Twilight got tied to the tree, why didn't Twilight undo the rope with magic? Does she need line-of-sight to the knot or something?

So, would you say we've finally gotten a worthy Spike episode at last? (after the consensual mehness of Owl's Well)

btw I LIKE Owl's Well, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't the most memorable episode.

Interesting point about that fire, but I prefem my version where Spike is from friendly breed of Dragons and his fire is result of something else or really trait of all dragons. Also I prefer magical dragons to be powrfull spellcaster ale D&D , at least few of them.

@Death Yeah, to eaches own I suppose. I could be entirely wrong. I like to imagine that Spike's fire will eventually mature and be able to do lots of other stuff besides teleporting. (and his telekinetic aura would be made of green flames. How awesome would that look?)

Reminds me of a novel about a newbie air force pilot I've read once.

A major point there was that your personal piloting skills don't matter, no matter how incredible they are, or at least they don't mean nearly as much as your ability to perform in a wing, as a member of a team.

I do think this is precisely what Wonderbolts excel at. It is head canon but it makes sense; and it would be a good explanation for why RD isn't a member of the wonderbolts yet.

This is a recurring theme in the series.

Ponies are talented. But they are young. Their skills are not honed. Their attempts are not reliable. They make mistakes.

That is a good subversion of Hard Work Hardly Works and a good subtle aesop itself.

Also, are those green spikes on Spike's back actually, y'know, SPIKES? (as in, made of bone) Or are they hair?

If they're the former then that one wonderbolt was able to saw right through them pretty easily That's kinda awesome.

Dear god, ten pages people. This is what I get for having to do housework.

Anyhow, loved the episode but I have this great urge to see it again.

I do find it fascinating that as Spike was growing up no one recognized him, I mean I figured the color palette would've given it away as well as proximity to ponyville.

Also, totally called the King Kong reference. I screwed up by saying he'd be atop the Carousel Boutique but all of my other details were 100% accurate.

@Spike's fire having the ability to teleport: I'd tend towards no on that. I think, on one of the Headscratchers, they decided on Celestia's scrolls being enchanted with teleportation by fire, but Spike just having normal fire. I'd say that makes more sense, many times, he's roasted food with his fire, as well as one of the books by accident, and they didn't teleport.

Well, to be fair, I don't think the other residents of Ponyville (or the mane cast for that matter) were expecting Spike to go from baby to adult and sweet to mindless in the span of only one day

Cut em some slack

I like to think he triggers his different fires via different means. Y'know, like he uses different muscles? (also, he teleported a thing of ink one time as well)

This is addressed in the episode. Notice how not even a vet knows what's the matter with Spike. Only Zecora knows dragons can grow overnight.
