Pinkie: If you're comfortable with it, I don't see a problem. It's frowned upon because they've had bad experiences with first person writing. If you're already good at doing it, I don't think they'll object.

Ginger: Okay so you don't have the ability. That doesn't mean you can't acquire it. It's often been similar for me. Ideas and design is my strength. I started out as a pretty awful artist. My naturally good eye-hand coordination helped a bit, but what I post here now is the culmination of over a decade of struggling with it. Writing I didn't have quite as bad a start with, but honestly, I'd be embarrassed to show anyone most of my prose that came before I started writing pony (there's maybe 2 short stories that would be the exception. Maybe) because I did such a bad job of getting my idea across. Even now, after a couple years long obsessive TV Tropes wiki walk and my recent burst in practice, I'm still more or less third rate (and that's by fanfiction standards, nevermind real publishers).

I guess the TLDR to take away from that is, these skills take years to develop, just stick with it and you'll get there.

btw, would you say it's easier to write a story in present or past tense?

Past tense. Writing a story in present tense is one of the big "Do Nots" of writing.

A lot of first person writing can be downright clumsy, since the standard format is third person. You have to get used to idea that the story is being written by "you"".

And there's always the Mary Sue element.

As in poorly written first person. Because it's harder to write, it's easier to really mess things up. Best I can gather, they just ran into one too many of those and normal human prejudices kicked in.

If given the oppurtunity to become a pony (for the sake of argument let's say the race is randomly assigned) and live the rest of your life in Equestria would you take it?

@ Ginger. Present tense has a lot of attributes that make it really difficult to tell a normal story. The main issue is that in present tense, every action in the story is happening now. The opening of the story is now, the climax of the story is now, and the ending is now. In present tense it's difficult to show the passing of time, it's difficult to establish a flow to the story, and it can get really tiresome to have everything happening now.

Also there's the fact that the written word is ultimately derived from the spoken word. You don't tell a campfire story in the present tense because in the present you are around the fire listening to a storyteller. You tell a story as either "I did, " or "he did." It makes it harder to establish suspension of disbelief if you're saying "I'm doing, " or "he's doing, " and that difficulty translates over to written works as well.

Edit: On the other hand, Equestria is a pretty peaceful and nice place apart from the yearly near apocalypse. So maybe.

It's not like there isn't already an artist in the thread someone could ask at any time at any moment just willing to fulfill the requests of a willing public.

If I somehow got stuck in Equestria I would be content to live out the rest of my days there. It's a better place than here. But if I had to choose...I dunno. I'd feel guilty leaving everything here.

Although it's a moot point, since I don't have much drawing time these days.

As for living in Equestria... I don't know. There's plenty keeping me here. I guess if it was like, all my family died or something, then sure. But even then, I'm losing my fingers, as well as anything video game related, so unless they make nice big type writers or I become a unicorn, that's my livlihood gone there. And honestly, much as I enjoy dexterity I'd rather be a pegasus than a unicorn, given the choice.
