Hmmm, I'd say it depends on the ship. On the whole I'm sure they make them pretty dang solid.

@Star: That's a good start, but you don't want to neglect the description either or you end up with a Featureless Plane of Disembodied Dialogue. But yeah, the important thing is to get started so you can catch any problems early.

@Apple: There's definitely some merit; I'm sure she could do some damage. But she wouldn't be ripping through dozens of ships like paper either.

Thanks guys.

@ Starscream

I have to play devil's advocate for a moment. This line:

a normal British teenage boy called Bradley Cooper whose tired of his desk job and his life in general and wishes for something to happen in his life.

I understand you're British too right? Please be aware that this sounds a lot like a self insert author avatar story, and the interwebs can react very badly to those. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, or tell you not to do it or anything. I'm just trying to warn you to beware of how some might react to it straight off the bat.

It could be funny if it was THIS Bradley Cooper.

Yeah, you'll want to be really careful if you make the main character too similar to yourself. Even if it isn't a self-insert, it might come across as that. You'll want to make sure to make the character very well rounded.

A kid getting bored of their life and being magically whisked away to adventure is an old cliched setup. Or possibly a good classic beginning.

But given that you can't rely on novelty if you're going that direction, you're going to have to be a hell of a good writer to pull that one off.

Bare in mind that the very basic premise of my own fic is the same. Guy whisked off on an adventure. So there's nothing wrong with the premise, as it's fairly common.

The premise of my most popular story boils down to "One pony gets a crush on another". That's it. No gimmicks. It's currently 170, 000 words and somehow got over a thousand upvotes (I seriously don't know how). An extremely simple or common premise is definitely usable.

Also well worth noting is that the opposite is true: exotic premises don't always lead to anything good.

It may sound like a bad idea but really it's gonna be far different than that trust me. Maybe I should tweak Brad a bit because so far he's seems too self insert at the moment but thanks guys for your feedback much appreciated. It's like they say: A good writer will never learn unless he has his critics right?

Y'know, with that whole horse meat controversy that was in the news for a while, I can't help but think about the fact that I just ate a Big Mac

Eeeeyup, my brain is weird

Hold up.

Did you say "Brad"?

I strongly suggest you pick another name for him.

(Yes, I know his official name is Flash Sentry. But I think the fandom kind of also knows him as Brad.)

I've heard some folks start using Brad to refer to human Flash, and the normal name for his pony version. The name seemed to have died off after his real name was revealed, but it seems to be making a return. Guess it kind of stuck.

[up] What? No way I am having Flash Sentry as a name! And who has Brad as a nickname for him?!

Before we knew his real name, the fandom dubbed him "Brad" and it kind of stuck.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the name. The whole "Brad" thing largely died off after his real name was revealed.

Which is funny, because nobody actually calls him Dreamy Cutebottom. Just some Flash Sentry nickname.

Guess everyone thinks it's cooler.

It's basically a joke name based on his apparent "generically attractive love interest" role.
