Hmmm, I'd say it depends on the ship. On the whole I'm sure they make them pretty dang solid.
Yeah, you'll want to be really careful if you make the main character too similar to yourself. Even if it isn't a self-insert, it might come across as that. You'll want to make sure to make the character very well rounded.
A kid getting bored of their life and being magically whisked away to adventure is an old cliched setup. Or possibly a good classic beginning.
But given that you can't rely on novelty if you're going that direction, you're going to have to be a hell of a good writer to pull that one off.

The premise of my most popular story boils down to "One pony gets a crush on another". That's it. No gimmicks. It's currently 170, 000 words and somehow got over a thousand upvotes (I seriously don't know how). An extremely simple or common premise is definitely usable.
It may sound like a bad idea but really it's gonna be far different than that trust me. Maybe I should tweak Brad a bit because so far he's seems too self insert at the moment but thanks guys for your feedback much appreciated.
