I think it's all the humour that makes it digestible. Pinkie's singing can really turn some people off though, even with the brief lampshade beforehoof.

For me, the second half of the pilot is painfully narmy in a way that the other adventure-type episodes aren't, while the first half is at least somewhat representative of the slice-of-life episodes in terms of the writing quality.

My favorite parts were the jokes at the beginning like Fluttertree, and Mild West dancing.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

Yeah, a bit narmy indeed.

I didn't watch the pilot two-parters for the longest time because I heard they weren't that interesting. Ended up liking them mostly.

I started at episode one and watched them in order. I knew beforehand that the first two episodes weren't really representative of the series as a whole, so my plan was to give the show six or eight episodes or so to hook me.
And, since today is apparently National Jump To Conclusions Day...

I didn't really have a plan when I started watching the series, just that if it didn't seem interesting, I could always drop it, no big deal.

Are you guys always this active in here? Yeesh, and here I thought the main Negima thread was the most active thread in the media subforum back when the manga was still running.

Oh, two things I forgot to mention yesterday:
  1. You can thank Japanese Teeth for introducing me to this show indirectly via writing his Negima/MLP:FIM crossover fanfic Caelum Contortum: Snarled Stories; even though I haven't actually read that story yet, its creation and the discussions that it initiated in the Negima fanfic thread did alert me to the existence of this remake of MLP. And believe me when I say that my initial reaction was not one of joy; on the contrary, being reminded of the days that I watched MLP had actually made me facepalm at the inanity of the old show (IMHO). I kept asking myself "What the hell possessed my younger self to actually enjoy that stupidity?!", and so far I can only blame childly naivete for that. That said, I am glad that I took the advice of watching a couple of clips from the new show and give it a chance... and I think one of the first ones I've seen were Flutteryshy's introduction (gah, supercute Shrinking Violet! One of my few weaknesses! XD).

  2. I think I glimsped a couple of Off Model moments in episode 2 — specifically some of the ponies' facial expressions while they were recieving the Elements during Twilight Sparkle's pre-asskicking exposition to Nightmare Moon. (Speaking of which, we need a Pre Asskicking Exposition trope.)

Hi, Marq! Nice to see you here! Glad you're enjoying it. I should warn you that Slice of Life episodes are more common than adventure episodes.
I can do Slice of Life. I love Azumanga Daioh for that, actually.

Keep up the reactions. We enjoy them.
Will do.

And don't worry. Good!Luna is AWESOME.
I am getting that vibe. Already know about a certain episode where she has learn a certain aesop, and I'm suspecting that the summary that I've read on the MLP:FIM wiki isn't doing it justice. Whatever the case, going into Ye Olde Butcherede English when you're nervous or angry? [lol]

Not to spoil too much, but most of the major villains are defeated in 2-parters, and there are several one-off antagonists that are dealt with in their one episode. Only a few make return appearances.

Ponies get shit done. None of this Joker Immunity BS...well, most of the time.
Really? So no "major villain sends underlings to do dirty work for a dozen episodes, and by the finale they either fail completely such that he decides to do it himself, or at least one of them manages to nab the MacGuffin and the ponies have to stop the Big Bad from performing whatever nefarious magical ritual he's attempting"?

[up]Japanese Teeth seems to be quite the charmer. tongue

As for your last query: Not really. There is continuity in the sense that past episodes are referred to in future ones occasionally, the main characters grow consistently throughout the show, and a few secondary or background characters make return appearances. However, it's mostly a slice of life with some adventure episodes tossed in.

I guess season 1 has an 'arc' of sorts that starts in episode 3, but it only comes up in a few episodes leading up to the season finale.

For me I'd always start with episodes 1 and 2. Since y'know they're the first episodes. And they feature best villain Nightmare Moon. And they're really good.

(As for what's up with me, definitely got a phone interview today in the morning, hence the early awakening.)

Yeah. This is pretty normal. And we used to be much faster.

Unfortunately you have to wait a while to see that episode, but yeah, most people loved Luna in that episode.

Nothing like that yet. Hasbro doesn't want it too hard to view the episodes out of order.
