I am seriously loving this Bioshock crossover fic. Disturbing as all hell, but excellent.

Yes, pretending is... fun I believe the word is.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

Is it still worth a read even if I haven't played the game?

I haven't played Bioshock for more than the intro bit (and suck badly enough at FPS'es that I wouldn't have been able to get that much farther) and I only know the plot and main twists through osmosis.
The fic makes some pretty wild narrative departures from the game anyway — it's still a look at the Ayn Rand mentality, but takes place while the city's society has still only halfway fallen in on itself, and un-twists the game's main twist really early on, so it's not about being a surprise sleeper agent that responds to preprogrammed phrases. And the protagonist is...really not the sort that would ordinarily be particularly compelling, but somehow works here.

I can like a protagonist evenif their not very likable if they stay in character and act in a way that I can understand from their perspective.

Yeah, she's a spoiled, manipulative, judgmental, mildly sociopathic bitch. But the way it comes out winds up contrasting itself with the Objectivist city in a really interesting way, especially since she's versed enough in reading people that the conspiracy unfolds in a way that you actually see about half the cards as it goes. It's the sort of thing I'd usually throw up my arms and say everyone's too much of an asshole to root for anyone, but somehow it works.

A setting that cynical needs to be fun for it to work. If you can't really like any of them, you can at least have fun in their insanity. Though there's got to be a balance of both so it doesn't get too overwhelming, Warhammer 40k, I'm looking at you.

The fun here very much isn't fun, so much as watching uncomfortable parallels form. It's very powerful, but doesn't remotely go the wacky-dark route.

I rarely venture to other forums to gauge these reactions. But generally...people seem to be much more positive about it then they were one or two weeks ago.
I don't think I've seen many reactions where people outright hate the thing, but there may be.

I'm back. Power finally came back a little after midnight last night, so I'm able to freely surf the 'net again.
Stay safe, Zombie. Wet is not a good condition for a zombie.
Well, you see, the funny thing is that the blackout didn't start until after the storm had basically already passed us. So, I was in no danger of getting wet.
