I'm pretty this applies to all politics ever with more than one dominant party. The options are either enable the government to do stuff, at which point whatever actions it takes will inevitably screw over a large portion of the population, or keep the government in check, which prevents them from doing anything, even things that would benefit most people. Either way people are going to complain about it because they're never happy unless the government is doing exactly what they want it to do, no more and no less.

Regarding Equestrian government, my take on it is that Celestia is sort of like the final authority, but she delegates most of it out to Mayors and Governors and stuff. She probably retains a sort of veto power, but wouldn't use it unless somepony really screwed up.

Ignore the etchiness and other proportion issues, they'll be fixed as soon as I get the basic pose right.

In Canada it often seems the general opinion is that if the governing party has a presence in our everyday lives, it's a bad thing.

And as Harper is teaching us every time he does anything, not paying close attention to the governing party can also be a very bad thing.

Canada does not host a politically inclined populace, which is... unfortunate.

Have we actually seen any form of governance in the show at all outside of mayor mare?

I don't know much about Candian politics. But I do remember something about the prime minister having lots of photos of himself everywhere.

Well, I wouldn't know about that. Though it wouldn't surprise me in the case of Pierre Treaudeu - not that he was particularly egotistical, just that people loved him a lot. So much so, some people claim his lingering popularity is the only thing helping his son along at the moment.

Personally, I think the next election is going to be weird. We have three main parties: Conservative(Right, obviously), Liberal(Central, emphasis on social liberties) and NDP(Left, emphasis on social services). The representative from the Conservative party is now publicly known to have done some serious skulduggery bullshit, and the conservative party in general is fondly remembered for having sent out messages telling known non-conservative voters the wrong locations for voting booths. The NDP has never actually been elected, and the one leader who looked like he MIGHT bring them to power up and died on us. The Liberals are being headed up by the son of a famous PM, but is coming under fire for being extremely young and inexperienced in the political game.

Well ... Our president seems to have become more silent on such things since becomming president. Still doesn't change the things he's said and done in the past though.

I agree with JT on Equestria's government. The princesses are the final authority, but they delegate a lot.
