Was a bit of a wasted opertunity to call back to Applebuck Season and give AJ a bit of character development.

I found both Magic Duel and Spike At Your Service both mildly amusing at best. In the case of the former it didn't add anything to Trixie's character, which was disappointing She simply goes mad with power due to her desire for revenge, and in the end is defeated through guile and learns the error of her ways. Spike At Your Service deals with life debts which could have been interesting, if the path that the episode took hadn't been painfully predictable. On the other hand, I enjoyed Sleepless in Ponyville, because of its demonstration that fear is universal and even the people you look up to are subject to one variety of fear or another, they've just developed ways to work through it.

If they would've had him set the thing on fire or something it would've been fine, but as is it was lackluster.

Timberzilla was a sentient creature. It was more humane to have it choke on a stone, then crumble into kindling. Or something.

Yeah, because letting a clearly reasoning creature choke to death is so humane.

The death wasn't permanent that way, because all the bits could reform since they were still intact?

Intentionally setting fire to your foes, sentient or not, is pretty dark for a kids show. Now accidentally setting off a fire that he just happens to get caught it, that's fine. Basically it's fine to burn your enemies, you just need to make it look like an accident.

Or I guess you could try arguing that timberwolves aren't actually living creatures, merely kindling and lumber that's been formed by the magic of the forest into wood golems that defend the forest. The lifecycle and nature of the timberwolves aren't really examined at all.

I suppose you could try wrapping your limbs around it and squeezing it repeatedly until it horks up the splinter. Or the stone, in this case.

By the by, Librarian: Since you read my stuff I don't doubt you'll find a certain irony in the fact that I take pause with the fandom's tendency to make the setting darker than it is... I'm not sure if I've shared it before in the fanfic thread but I do have a logic behind it.
