Actually, the abundance of cacti in desert regions is a bit of a misnomer. They can grow in theoretically any relatively dry area, but due to varying factors such as climate, soil conditions, etc, cacti are actually somewhat uncommon in a lot of deserts. For instance out here in the Mojave, you'd have to do some searching to find any.
