It's not very far indeed. It just seems like the boondocks because it's not as urbanized as Manehatten or as heavily-wrought as Canterlot.

Rather it has a more village/suburb feel to it.

@Ginger: Maybe adult dragon fire is more potent than young dragon fire. Also, I'm guessing that the ponies put Spike into that picture as a "wish you were here" sort of gesture, mainly because it makes no sense for that picture to be in there otherwise. It was obviously supposed to be a series of happy moments in Spike's life, so putting in something depressing makes no sense.
