Although using a name already used in the show might draw some comments, I'm fine with that. I mean...names aren't that unique, even in this show, and there's a few ponies called Twilight. So I think I'll be OK.

I don't think people are going to have any problem with confusing Fancy Pants and Fancy Acrobatics.

If they have a problem and say its too similar... they are simply just dumb :P

@Applelight: Given that he's referred to as "Batty" most of the time anyway, I doubt it would be a problem.

Also, Rarity is 2nd best pony after Twilight.

I hope Rarity gets a good episode(s) in Season 4. She deserves it.

And you guys are right. Btw, I'm starting to think that the whole 'dark and brooding' unusual type is just overdone and prone to accusations of Mary Sue. And Batty does mean crazy btw.

So, I'm trying to devise a way to make Batty a big more eccentric and 'zany' than what I first had. But I must be careful...it's a fine line between crazy and stupid, and I don't what my lead being stupid.

It's only overdone if you do it poorly and not at all thought out. Just treat him like a real person (as opposed to a character, or worse, a stereotype) and it'll all work out fine.

I think it all depends on how old you were when you first saw the cartoon. Anything that existed before I was 13-15ish I consider a classic.
