As for Keepvid, the applet is just a thin client. In fact, it appears to simply call javascript functions on the webpage. The applet itself is probably safe, but given the amount of js manipulation they're doing, I wouldn't be surprised if there's an XSS hole on the site somehwere.
Another interesting thing is that they're doing
Xml Http Requests to Youtube through client side js. I bet you could just grab the scripts off their site and run it yourself if you wanted.

Well if they do release their sourcecode, I might try to set it up, depending on how complicated it is. I'd probably make my version private though.
