Ordered earlier today two more of the upcoming My Little Pony books— Welcome to Equestria and Meet the Ponies of Ponyville. Had a $5 credit on Amazon, so I figured, why not? With Prime shipping, they're only about $2.50 each, which is a great deal.

I would love if they decide to ascend the rest of the cast and AJ goes first. It would be a really great twist, as she's probably the most "mundane" pony.

If leadership is one of the characteristics that define Alicornhood, AJ would be the next for certain. AJ is the only one besides Twilight that has always been responsible. Pinkie would be last under this criteria though.

Yeah RD is good at small group leadership to achieve a specific goal. Not so much a large, long term general leadership. basically, RD is a great front line commander, and squad leader. Horrible as a strategic commander making the overall plans.

Applejack gets to Ascend at the end of s4; Rainbow Dash at the end of s5; Rarity at the end of s6; Pinkie Pie at the end of s7; and Fluttershy at the end of s8.

Spike grows wings and marries Rarity at the end of s9; by which time he and Rarity have grown up. And the writing will make us all cry like little fillies. And it will be beautiful.

@Calnos: It just sounds so dirty like that.

Re: Order of ascension, here's how I see it:

Logically, Twilight was first. Element of Magic, de facto team leader, personal protege of the princess; it makes sense.
Applejack would be next. She's the most solid and least prone to freak out, and her biggest flaw is that she's too dedicated to helping those around her, which isn't that bad of a flaw for a leader to have. Not to mention that she's already used to acting as an authority figure to Apple Bloom, and she's basically the Team Mom anyway.
After that would be Rarity. She's responsible enough to run her own business, and while she's rather histrionic she's good enough at recognizing and correcting her own flaws that she'd be okay. She'd definitely have to overcome her Attention Whore tendencies, though.
Fluttershy's main problem would be her dislike for imposing herself on others. Her character as a leader would work, but she'd have to learn to give directions and orders to other ponies without clarifying it with an "um...if that's okay with you" afterward.
Pinkie or RD would be last. Pinkie has a lot of difficulty knowing when to reign in the insanity, so she'd have to learn when to be serious. RD has definitely leadership skills, but she's also a glory hound and would have to learn to reign in her "LOOK AT ME I'M AWESOME" tendencies when she's in a position where she'll be constantly lauded.

I would put Rarity at the bottom of the ascension list.. Irony being one of many reasons for it.

I feel like Dash would probably be one of the worst choices until something horrible happens while she's showing off — then she'd make a really, really quick shift and be one of the better ones.

She's already shown that kind of responsibility, in front of the Wonderbolts of all places. The priorities are there, just maybe not quite consistent enough.
