@Kegisak: Let's just say that every social/political/religious group has nutcases who take every opportunity to attempt to push their agenda. Fortunately in my experience they aren't too common, but when they show up it's a huge pain in the butt.

@ Blissey: It presumably had to be pretty soon after the founding of Equestria. Since A: Starswirl was alive then, B: Luna knew Starswirl and C: Luna and Celestia didn't come to Equestria until after Discord was out.

I'm going to say Discord reigned for 1000 years of darkness because that number always comes up a lot.
It was probably a year or two of tremendous strife and playful near-extinction events though. Stuff probably wouldn't survive much longer of that kind of biosphere-breaking mess.

Yeah, I've met plenty of atheists who studied religion well enough to be qualified to teach about it in an academic and historical sense. Better than most people in my congregation and more than a few preachers.
The funny part is that oftentimes atheists are more knowledgeable about religion than the average beleiver, since they've often studied and debated it a lot.
Well sure, but the same could then be said for ... any religion.
