Hm. The new episode feels kind of a little flat.

Not bad, just sort of meh.

I actually expected to see some pony Olympics. I guess that will be saved for season 4.

@Ace: I understand them not asking the question initially, what irks me more is how they never caught on for the rest of the episode. One or two misunderstandings I could buy, but the problem is that for 80% of the episode they keep dancing around the subject. It's just hard to accept that none of them actually mention the words "inspection" or "inspector" despite hanging around her all day. The longer the misunderstanding drags out, the harder it is to believe.

They did notice things were off, but RD kept assuring them that it was all part of the inspector's plan to catch them off guard and test them.

Yeah, that's basically the only thing that kept me from doing this:

One of them would probably have caught on if RD hadn't kept distracting them.

So what's the consensus on this episode? It seemed very Idiot Plot to me.

Pretty much, it wasn't terrible, but not great either. Solid 3.5/5 from me.

@CDRW: General consensus is "positive, but not one of the best". Good, but not great, basically.

I kind of agree that it edged dangerously close to Idiot Plot on occasion, but I think it had enough other mitigating factors to skew it in a positive direction. Stuff like the slapstick being amusing, or giving RD a legit character moment when she apologizes for screwing up the welcome. The one thing that keeps it from fully falling into Idiot Plot for me is that RD was basically distracting the rest of the cast from realizing things because she didn't really know what she was talking about.
