They tend to not have a lot of focus, since they're often just "the adventures of self insert hanging out with ponies, " and depending on the story might end up with gratuitous sexings.

That's not what I've seen, most Hi E fics involve trying to find a way to get the human back home. Of course, there is adventures/hanging out with ponies along way. But they do have a focus. At least, the good ones do.

I remember reading a fic where Megan from G1 wound up in Equestria. A lot of it dealt with her initial confusion with the differences between the two presentations and generally lampshading the odder bits from both. I think it was on the MLP Lexicon, but can't recall the title.
