It can be. If you're a horrible judge of character, you can wind up pushing away good folk who would have otherwise have your back, and put your trust in someone who'll end up using you for their own schemes then toss you aside like a used sandwich bag.
You can't expect me to be fine.
I don't expect you to care.
@Applelight: That would honestly be a really good core to build the plot on. His previous crew mutinies because he sucks at dealing with them, and his character arc is him learning to trust the judgment of his new crewmates and recognizing that he has trouble with that.
Yeah, it sounds good, and it's always a good idea to have the antagonists have a personal vendetta with the main character (I'm assuming these pirates will be recurring?).
I think you should just start writing something and not endlessly toss ideas around. Ideas are worth nothing without implementation, and coming up with more ideas is the easiest way to procrastinate.

That sounds like such a British thing to say, Apple XD "Knocked it for six" XD
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.
I'm going to bed now, but I hear what you're all saying. I'm going to write the story, and in the meantime, draw the characters too. Now that I have a story to work from, there will be no more pointless mulling that goes no where.
Tealove is best pony.
Ask The Mane Six
I've never even heard it before. Apparently it comes from Cricket.

Well good luck.
