Well, there's a lot more to it than just that. The pool table is just the hook. He pretty much has to go around to each individual person and use a different technique to get them to actually buy into it, usually compliments or giving them high hopes for this or that. I watched it not long ago, it's quite good, and I have to say I was honestly impressed with Hill.

Yeah, basically Harold Hill's modus operandi is to find something in the town that he can make into a scandal - in this case, he convinces the population of River City that the new pool table in the billiard parlor will lead to wild and degenerate youth. And from there, he pitches his bands and instruments and uniforms as the solution to the problem. And like Kegisak said, there's a lot of fast-talking with individuals about how their kids are perfect for being musicians, all of it being a total load of crap.

Also, I ship Flim/Twilight.
